In this paper, the restrictive conditions of single and double syllables of directional complement are studied through the semantic feature analysis method, valence analysis method, transformation analysis method, syntactic component analysis methods and others from cognitive linguistics, semantic domain, conventional structuralism, pragmatics and others based on the basic combination principle of form and meaning on the three dimensions of "syntax, semantics, pragmatics" based on the research of quantitative corpora, and data statistics is adopted for demonstration of it.The study on the restrictive conditions of single and double syllables of directional complement is discussed in five chapters in this paper. The first chapter is the introduction, which manly involves in the statements of previous research results, determination of proposed study methods and corpus sources, definition of objects to be studied, establishment of quantitative corpus, and discussion on the restrictions on single and double syllable of directional complement based on previous research results. The second chapter is the analysis of restrictions of the verbs and adjectives before directional complements on their single and double syllables, which is mainly discussed from syllables of verbs and adjectives, valence of verbs, and semantics of adjectives. The single and double syllables of directional complements are less limited by the single-and double-syllable verbs, but the degree of pairing between single-syllable verbs and directional complements is higher than that between double syllables(polysyllables)and directional complements. The syllables of directional complements are not limited by divalent verbs. When directional complements are paired with univalent verbs, monosyllables have more restrictive conditions than disyllabic syllables. The pairing of directional complements and trivalent verbs is most restricted. The pairing of directional complements and adjectives is limited to the double-syllable directional complements "go down, down,up" and the monosyllable directional complement "over, cross, out"(adjectives are mostly "high, many" and other words that contain degree meaning). When an adjective has a positive meaning(warm tone),it is more often associated with "up,";otherwise,it is more often associated with“down and go down”.The third chapter is about the analysis and discussion of restrictions of syllables, semantic relations and syntactic functions of objects on single and double syllables of directional complements from the perspective of objects. The syllables of an object have almost no restrictions on the syllables of directional complement, mainly because the semantic role of the object limits the single and double syllables of directional complement. When the object is an agent component and the format is "verb + directional complement + object",the syllable of the directional complement can only be double;when the object is afflicted and lies behind a verb(verb + directional complement + object),the directional verb is mostly single syllable. The syntactical function of objects has a smaller limit to the single and double syllables of directional complements. The fourth chapter is the analysis from the perspective of positional relationship of directional complements in a sentence, which is mainly divided into four formats(v+ vd,v + vd + o,v + o + vd,v+vdl+o+vd2).The structures "v+vd+o,v+o+vd,v+vdl+o+vd2" are compared and the reasons why the structures can be interchanged are discussed. The fifth chapter is the analysis from the perspective of semantics. The semantic directions, three kinds of semantics(trend meaning, result meaning, and state meaning)of directional complements and other meanings on their single and double syllables are studied. When the semantic direction of a directional complement is an agent action and the verb before the directional complement is an intransitive verb(except for the object in it),the syllable of the directional complement is double. When the semantic direction of a directional complement is an agent action and the previous verb is intransitive followed by an object in it,the directional complement is single syllable. When the semantic direction of a directional complement is a receptor subject, the syllable of the directional complement can be single or double, but it is more likely to be double. When a directional complement expresses result meaning and state meaning, the syllable is double. When it expresses starting meaning, the syllable of it is single.
