Comparative Study In The Homonym Differences Across The Strait

As the intercourse between the mainland and Taiwan increased day by day, particularlythe Three Direct Links, the inconveniences that the language differences made to the humanintercourse and the academic cultural exchange became more and more prominent. Thevocabulary has changed by times and places and the differences were the most intuitionalreflect, it can be divided into three types: homonym, synonym and the special neologismacross the strait. The most interactive and worthy one is homonym. In this paper which hasselected341homonyms respectively across the strait as the research objects, and formed anexcellent word list, what’s more, it has investigated the usage of homonyms combine thelinguistic information. According to the discrepancies, the homonym can be divided into fourtypes: all different meanings, different sizes of meaning domain, different quantities ofmeaning and different colours meaning. Moreover, the causes of the phenomenon had beendiscussed from external and internal aspects in this paper. External causes: the differentpolitical systems and linguistic policies, the historical influences and the social lives etc;Internal causes: the evolution of the sense of words, the development of neologism, theabbreviation of words, the influences of dialects and loanwords etc. Furthermore, the currentsituation of unification of the homonyms across the strait has been analysed further in thispaper, like: some different meaning items get into other’s official dictionary, some words hadalready in general used, the degree of comprehension of the words has been strengthened.Besides, it also analyses the homonymic phenomenon which caused by the popular words ofboth sides across the strait, and look forward to the prospect of the vocabulary-developing.
