Unlike other forms of translation, simultaneous interpretation without text requires theinterpreter to start translating before he/she is able to grasp the full message of the segment.English words with multiple meanings, words that are rarely used, figures of speech, acronyms and new words are inevitably difficult to interpret in simultaneous interpretationwithout text.Based on Gile’s coping tactics in simultaneous interpretation and drawing upon myown experience in this profession, this thesis proposes five tactics to cope with difficultwords in English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation without text.By comparing the two types of translation in dealing with difficult words, this thesisalso illustrates the real-life application of these five tactics. With an experiment with eight professional interpreters this thesis analyzes how theychoose one tactic over another when doing English-Chinese simultaneous interpretationwithout text in the real world and verifies Gile’s five rules in the selection of tactics insimultaneous interpretation.
