This thesis describes the historical evolution of the interpretive theory, discusses itsstrengths and weaknesses, and offers suggestions for its future research direction byreviewing literature on the interpretive theory. The thesis explains why the ESIT scholarsadopt intuitive speculation as their research approach, why they select the interpreter astheir object of study, what the influence of paradigms is, and other factors both inside andoutside the ESIT that hinder the development of interpretive theory. As a review study, thisthesis introduces the evolution of the interpretive theory, analyzes the weaknesses ofinterpretive theory, and suggests how to address these weaknesses in future. By analyzingthe weaknesses of such a theory that has significance for both interpreting studies andpractice, the thesis also concludes with a few suggestions for interpreting studies, in thehope of improving the discipline, which include deepening interdisciplinary research intointerpreting, diversifying the population of interpreting studies, and optimizing academiaof interpreting research.
