The Study Of Developing The Northwest Association During The Period Of The Republic Of China(1932--1936)

In modern times, the northwest has attracted attention more and more everyday because of the intensifying frontier crisis. This region is focused, with its development and construction in schedule and concomitant policies and measures made. This period in fact witnesses the popularizing of "the construction of northwest". In addition, with the "9.18" and "1.28" events happened in1931and1932, the northwest region is paid more attention since the northeast region is lost and the southeast coastal area as well as north China is threatened directly. Hence with the advocation of developing the northwest stronger, the government made various plans and took actions. With the help of senior officials and patriot citizens, the number of scholars and groups who studies the development of northwest increases drastically, and a lot of journals regarding the northwest region appear.Northwest development association is one of the influential and early-set social cultural groups at that time. It is set up and approved by the KMT central committee in1932by various scholars like Dai Ren, Chen Lifu, Xiao Zheng, Daihong. This association is for the prosperity of the country and society with the target of facilitating the governmental development of northwest. Northwest Development, which is the journal created by this association, with its theme and target overlapping with those of the association, encouraged ambitious people to do field work and acquire real data in northwest, introduces the real happenings in northwest, published and discussed plans of the construction of northwest and advocated positively the business of developing northwest. This journal is supported by many KMT junior officials and is therefore one of the journals influential in studying and advocating northwest development.This thesis, with the research target of northwest development association and its journal, studies typical cases concerning northwest development in1930’s. And we find the cognition and purpose of the development of northwest region at that time. Meanwhile, we give a profile indirectly of the dynamic relationship between the policies of KMT government in terms of the development of northwest and the people of China, and find out the concomitant attitude as well as policies of the government in1930’s. Also, we know the influence of this association in the construction of northwest. This thesis is organized as follows:The first part is the introduction. In this part, the reason and meaning of choosing this topic, relevant studies, the methodology and the difficulties and novelties of this thesis are given.The second part is the body part. It contains four chapters. The first chapter gives a general picture of the northwest development association, including the background of its creation, the diachronic overview of its development, its organization and funding. The second chapter is about the journal Northwest Development, including the situation of its setting up and the contents of this journal. The third chapter concerns the analysis of the members of this association and the journal, including their educational background, ethnics, military and political histories. In addition, representatives will be given extra attention with detailed analysis. Thus, on this basis, their cognition, motivations, suggestions, plans and measures of the northwest development will be discussed, and the relationship between them and the governmental action of constructing northwest will be studied. The fourth chapter is the evaluation of the association and the journal, including the value and effect of the association, the reason of its dismissing and its weak points.The third part is the conclusion, including the historical status, contributions and limitations of the association and the journal.
