With China’s position in the international community and rapid economicdevelopment, the Chinese craze is even more popular globally. Therefore, demandsfor Chinese teachers around the world have been growing. Lacking Chinese teachershas been a major problem for many countries. Neither the quantity nor the quality ofChinese teaching staffs can suffice the need for Chinese language education. Theauthor of this thesis has conducted surveys on five major language training centers,national schools, trilingual schools and universities with Chinese department inBandung, Indonesia. By surveying the number and quality of teachers, this research istargeting at various aspects concerning Chinese teachers in Indonesia. These aspectsinclude age, gender, years spent on teaching, work pressure, salaries, status, quality ofteachers, future career planning, textbooks and methodologies. This thesis alsoanalyzes the factors which exert influence on development of Chinese teachers basedin Bandung. The author finds that there have not been adequate Chinese teachers inBandung. Most of them are young teachers who have just finished postgraduate study.They are not well-paid for the job so that they are not clear about career path. Finally,in light of the surveys, this thesis also makes some suggestions on teachers’development in Bandung, hoping to offer some help to solve the issue of lackingteaching staffs.
