| A software user guide provides effective information and guidelines forsoftware users. The effective translation of software user guides plays an importantrole in promoting domestic software in international markets. This study follows abasic line of “finding problems–analyzing problems–solving problems–checkingsolutions–reaching goals”. Analyzing the text type of software user guides(structural problems), addressing software terminology translation (conceptualproblems), and selecting linguistic methods (linguistic problems), this study aims toprovide a systemic framework for translating software user guides. Based on sixtysamples of software user guides, including thirty from the world’s top ten softwarecompanies and thirty from domestic software companies, this study mainly consistsof three parts. Firstly, the text function and the text type of software user guides aresummarized. Then the structural problems with the Chinese-English translation ofsoftware user guides are discussed and some terminology problems are addressed.Finally, typical linguistic problems with software translation are dealt with. Thisstudy is expected to conduce to a better level of translation quality and make forstandard software translation. |
