A Report On The Translation Of Translation In The Digital Age (Chapter2)

This is a translation report on the English-Chinese translation of “Chapter Two”(about11,238words) from Translation in the Digital Age by Michael Cronin. The five-chapter Translation in the Digital Age was first published in2013, as one of the series New Perspectives in Translation Studies by Routledge. In the book, Michael Cronin examines the role of translation with regard to the emerging digital technologies and analyzes their social, cultural and political consequences. With links to many areas of study, Translation in the Digital Age deserves to be examined being an academic work on translation and a vital read for all students of modern language, translation studies, cultural studies and applied linguistics.In this report, the translator analyzes the source text to figure out its stylistic and linguistic features, and introduces the collection and reading of materials related to the source text, books and theses on translation theories and methods that will be employed in the translating process, and dictionaries and electronic tools necessary and helpful for the translation. After a wide reading of materials on comparison and translation between English and Chinese, the translator finally decides to apply contrastive approach in translating the English source text into Chinese basing on the principle of dynamic equivalence, and thus make the natural transformation from English to Chinese. In the case analysis, analyses with examples are made according to five aspects of English-Chinese differences.The translator benefits a lot from this translation. Before translating, a translator should read the source text over and fully understand the original meaning, and then collect materials related for the translation. In the very process of translation, the translator should first focus on the original meaning of each sentence, then analyze the meaning by paragraph and the text as a whole, and finally check the translation to ensure the quality. But without enough information, the translator fails to give appropriate translation to several compound words and correct translation to some long sentences, so apparently the present translation has defects. Therefore, a good translator should have solid bilingual cognitive ability, recognize the differences between languages, and develop contrastive consciousness for language transformation.
