In today’s globalized world, more and more people are interconnected than everbefore. As an important means of communication, simultaneous interpretation playsa critical role in promoting exchanges between people form different countries andcultures. Simultaneous interpretation is a highly demanding task. It is different fromother means of interpretation due to one of its most distinct features---simultaneity.The interpreter is faced with the great pressure and challenges during the process ofsimultaneous interpreting and needs to utilize useful strategies to cope with thedifficulties. Anticipation, as one of the most important strategies in simultaneousinterpreting, proves helpful to mitigate the interpreter’s pressure. This thesis tries toexplore how to put the strategy of anticipation into best use in the process ofsimultaneous interpretation from both a theoretical perspective and a case study.First, the thesis borrows the important finding of Gile—Effort Model to prove theimportance of anticipation in simultaneous interpreting. The thesis introduces andanalyzes linguistic anticipation and extra-linguistic anticipation. Then the author usesthe simultaneous interpreting practice to further analyze the application ofanticipation in simultaneous interpreting. From the case, the necessity of training ofthe strategy of anticipation in simultaneous interpreting learning is stressed. Finally, the thesis draws the conclusion that the strategy of anticipation can help theinterpreter complete the interpreting task with fewer challenges and less pressure.Based on the findings of the research, the author points out the limitations of thispaper and encourages researchers to conduct further studies in this field.
