With the aim of improving the Simultaneous Interpretation (SI) performance, the thesis elaborates on the anticipation in SI and points out that anticipation plays avital role in enhancing the SI performance. The thesis briefly reviews the results ofprevious studies on anticipation in SI and proposes a more detailed classificationwhere Linguistic anticipation could be subdivided into lexical, syntactic and discourselevel and extralinguistic anticipation could include thematic knowledge of thespeeches, background knowledge of the speakers and encyclopedic knowledge.Centering on Daniel Gile’ Effort Model, the thesis explains four effort componentsthat compose the SI process and relevant capacity requirements, which proves thenecessity and significance of anticipation in SI. Based on Gile’s Effort Model, theauthor conducts a textual analysis on two public speeches. One is by Xi Jinping, thePresident of China, at the2013Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference and the otheris by Barack Obama, the President of the United States, at his2013SecondInauguration.
