In spite of the fact that the translation of political essays is a tough task, it is worthwhile to translate them, because it is full of challenge. So Wen Jiabao’s Report on the Work of the Government-Delivered at the Fifth Session of the Eleventh National People’s Congress on March5,2012(Excerpts) is slected as the source text with a great challenge, although its English version has come out. This thesis, from the aspect of semantic and communicative translation theory, studies the translation of the expressions with Chinese characteristics and parallel structure in Wen Jiabao’s Report on the Work of the Government. In Peter Newmark’s opinion, different translation methods should be adapted to different text-types so as to solve different translation problems in an attempt to achieve the maximum faithfulness of translation. The semantic translation and communicative translation are the most influential achievements achieved by Peter Newmark, one of the well-known British translation theorist in the field of translation theory and practice. The political essay is a text which accuracy, concision and logicality are characteristic of. As a result, the target text must be translated as closely as possible to the original one to achieve accuracy. With the theoretical guidance of the semantic translation and the communicative translation, the translation of the source text and report of the translation are finished, including the analysis of the translation principles and strategies used. The report selects and mainly discusses the translation of some expressions with Chinese characteristics. They are shorted form phrases, neologisms, culture-loaded expressions, phrases with suffix of Chinese character "Hua"(化) and four-character phrases. In addition, this report studies and analyzes the translation of parallel structure used in the political essay. As a translation report, it consists of five chapters. Chapter one is a brief introduction to this thesis, which describes the purpose, background and significance of this translation project. Chapter two is a general idea about the source text, the political essay, including its definition and linguistic features. Chapter three discusses the preparations and difficulties in translating the political essay, and introduces the translation theory to be used by the author in this translation project. It is Peter Newmark’s theory of semantic translation and communicative translation. Chapter four is the main body of this report. It focuses on analyzing the translation of expressions with Chinese characteristics and parallel structure in Wen Jiabao’s Report on the Work of the Government. With the detailed case study, this report discusses the corresponding methods and strategies for translating such kind of text. The report sums up that when translating the political essay, people have to combine the semantic translation and the communicative translation. More often than not, the semantic translation is considered as the main method, supplements with the communicative translation. Chapter five is the conclusion. It serves as a comprehensive summary of the translation project. It sums up the translation experience, including the unsolved problems and the related difficulties. It also mentions the limitations of this project. All the experience in this translation should be of vital importance to the author’s future career in translation. At the same time, it will be useful for others to study the translation of political essays.
