Chinese calligraphy has a long history, and has a close relationship with Chinese culture. It also enjoys a high reputation in the world. The calligraphy education and Chinese teaching as a foreign language were combined early in the1990’s when calligraphy classes were offered on Chinese language programs. Scholars and educators have done a lot of research, and developed some teaching methods and gained teaching experience of incorporating calligraphy into Chinese language teaching. Based on the theories of calligraphy and Chinese teaching, the author tries to break up the whole into small parts, making the teaching of calligraphy more flexible for various classes in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, in order to stimulate the students’ interest in learning, cultivate their literary appreciation ability, create a rich cultural environment for Chinese learning, and improve the students’ Chinese writing ability. In this thesis, the author tries to introduce the method of bringing calligraphy elements into the Chinese vocabulary teaching, Chinese literature classes, cultural background introduction, and also gives some examples of classroom activities. It is hoped that the present study will help promote this teaching method and provide a feasible way to spread the Chinese culture in Chinese language teaching.
