In the history of Chinese, Middle Chinese has nexus status. It not only inherits the ancient Chinese, but also lays the foundation on the development of modern Chinese language. Medieval is a turbulent era in history with rapid change of dynasties, frequent ethnic fusion and frequent war. On the culture, Buddhism was introduced into China, Taoism was rose, and Confucianism was further developed. So Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism coexisted. Therefore, the changes of the medieval language in the period is quite large and has great research value.Chinese vocabulary is composed of monosyllabic words and polysyllabic words. Ancient Chinese vocabulary is mainly monosyllabic words, such as "Analects of Confucius, according to statistics,378polysyllabic words, while there are1126monosyllabic words, accounting for74.9%of the total." In disyllabification process, polysyllabic words is composed of monosyllabic words as morpheme. Hence the importance of monosyllabic words in the vocabulary of the system is self-evident. In middle Chinese, although disyllabification has become a trend, but the number of monosyllabic words which are active in spoken and written is still a lot, some monosyllabic words are even more than the frequency of use polysyllabic words. So the paper studies medieval monosyllable words. Papers will be divided into three main sections to analyze the Middle monosyllabic words.1、The first chapter is an introduction, the paper describes the background and the significance of the topic, the current status of research and the research theories and methods of the paper.2、The second chapter discusses the new Monosyllablic words. This chapter is the focus of this paper. We divide into five dynasties which are the Eastern Han Dynasty, Three Kingdoms, the Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties, Sui Dynasty. According to the corpos of "Dictionary", we summarize new words of each dynasty and outline the appearance of new words. Simultaneously we analysis the causes of these monosyllabic new words. There are two main aspects:a large number of new things and new concepts and people’s accurate statement. And according to various the tone and font, we investigate the source of the new Monosyllablic words. There are two ways in tone which are homophones formation and sound change; in the font is mainly produced he new font and created new words based on the old font.3、The third chapter discusses the evolution of medieval meaning. Middle Ages had a lot of new glosseme, either ancient univocal word or polyseme, the glosseme are rich in medieval. In the analysis of the meaning extended by our theoretical sememe analysis, we compare the core sememe and limited sememe to analyze the expand, reduce, transfer of meanings. The paper also examines the meaning blur, meanings highly emerge in medieval times, and a lot of nouns, verbs, adjectives adverb into imaginary.4、The fourth chapter discusses the development of common words. Common words is an important part of the vocabulary history. Paper discusses common words from the synchronic and diachronic perspective. In the analysis of the era of common words, we divide Middle Age into Eastern Han, WeiJin and Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui four times, which is analysed based on the unique of common words of each time. And in the analysis of basic common words, we mainly glosseme analyse the synonymous substitutions of common words.5、The fifth chapter is the conclusion. The paper analyses medieval monosyllabic words to explore the internal development of Medieval Chinese from some aspects such as politics, thought, culture and cogitation.
