Throughout the1990s, many of China’s greatest writers have devoted time to translation, making a major impact on the development of Chinese translation. However, their roles of translators have been neglected. As a matter of fact, their contribution to translation should not be neglected, yet they deserve a corresponding position in the history of translation in China. Notably, Lin Huanping is one of them. As a senior writer of League of Chinese Left-Wing Writers(左联作家联盟),Lin Huanping is renowned in the literary theory circle at home and abroad, whose creations about literary theory have drawn much attention from scholars since thel990s. But the research on his translation activities can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Few people know his translations and his translator identity. As a matter of fact, his creations and translations relate to each other. Lin Huanping has achieved certain accomplishment in his translation practice. In his lifetime, the books translated by Lin Huanping have been published more than12, and articles about translation published in academic journals have amounted to20, which are incorporated in The Collected Translation Works of Lin Huanping(Vol.5)(《林焕平译文集》5卷本).Though Lin Huanping hasn’t left us systematic translation thought, yet it is very practical for the future translators since all his translation thoughts are based on his long-term translation practice. In a word, the translation activities of Lin Huanping fail to attract attention from the current translators, which should be considered as a real regret in today’s translation field. This thesis attempts to introduce Lin Huanping’s translation activities, including his translation practices and translation thoughts. And it employs Andre Lefevere’s ideology as the theoretical framework and illustrates the social ideology at that time, and then the thesis draws examples from Lin Huanping’s version the Battlefront of Haikou (《汉口前线》) and Travel from Zhengzhou to Xi’an (《从郑州到西安》) and analyzes his translation strategies by case studies; Finally the thesis analyzes the feature of Lin Huanping’s translation thoughts. To sum up, this thesis has these major findings on Lin Huanping’s translation activities. Lin Huanping translates enormous works and covers a broad selection of subject matters including literary theory, short stories and literary works, which greatly inspire the Chinese to fight against Japanese aggressors and plays an important role during anti-Japanese war; Lin Huanping’s academic achievements on KuraharaKorehito(藏原惟人)have been unprecedented in China up to now, which will pave the way for further studies on Japanese culture, especially the literary theory; greatly affected by social ideology during anti-Japanese war, Lin Huanping adopts flexible strategies in his English-Chinese translation, including naturalization, foreignization, replacement, addition and omission. The thesis explores his translation thoughts from seven aspects including the purpose of translation, the criteria of translation, the difficulties in translation, the translation method, the qualification of a translator and the attitude of a translator, which supplies practical methods and advices for Japanese-Chinese translation, such as the method on dealing with multiple complex sentences and the features of translating a theoretical works. It puts forward some suggestions about further studies, which will encourage scholars to conduct more and further research on Lin Huanping’s translation.
