This paper is a report on translation of Section Eight of Part Three of "Issues andOptions in Language Teaching", written by H.H. Stern, edited by P. Allen. The text, abook mainly discussing theories of language teaching, belongs to the nonliterary text.However, this text is professionally and theoretically authoritative, covering manyfields of language research and teaching. In order to approach the theories proposed bywriter, translation is carried out under the guidance of thick translation, which aims tohelp translator access to the cultural and historical contexts of the original text byretracing the deeper meaning of the original text and writer’s intention so thattranslator may recreate the writer’s purposes and help readers maximumly approachthe writer and contexts of the original text. Serving this purpose, literal translation andcompensation are applied to the translation. And the strategy of foreignization,supplemented by domestication, is majorly used. With regar to these, translation skills,such as, annotation, addition, and reframing, are also needed. And then, the hiddentextual meaning can be uncovered and comprehensible to target language readers,which makes readers get closer to author’s intention. Based on the principle,combination of writer’s and translator’s intention can be achieved. Respectively,writer, translator and the readers are all the subjective matters of translation. In theprocess, their interactive roles in interpreting text, finally, are accesses to the fidelity tothe original text.A Translation Project Report for Section Eight of Part Three of "Issues andOptions in Language Teaching" is the source text. This translation report consists offour parts. Part one is an introduction of the translation project, including thebackground, the purpose and the significance of it, pointing out that the thicktranslation is the guiding principle of translation. Part two explores the deeper meaningof the original test from the perspective of the background, the main content, the targetreaders, the linguistic characteristics and make comments on it. Part three discusses therole of thick translation in dealing with important and difficult points in translation,probes the translation methods and skills applied, and analyses its effects under theguidance of thick translation. Part four concludes the inspiration, lessons and experience the translator had got from the translation project, as well as some problemsthat are remain unsolved.Through the translation, translator has deeper understanding of the guidance roleplayed by translation theories in practice. Appropriate use of theories may perfecttranslation. But translation still need to be improved. Although thick translationprinciple is applied, it is possible for translator to misunderstand the text and not tofully comprehend writer’s intention. Naturally, the readability of the translation is notas good as what the translator has been intended to do.
