A Report On The Translation Of A Bird In The House

Margaret Laurence is one of the most famous Canadian female writers. Her Manawaka. series of novels has helped her to win international fame. In every novel, Laurence creates a courageous female character who firmly struggles for independence and explores the significance of living.This report discusses my translation of A Bird in the House, one of Laurence’s Manawaka novels, with focus on translation strategies adopted from the perspective of interpretive theory. Interpretive theory holds that a translator’s primary concern is to identify the sense behind words and re-express them in the target language. Through a careful study of interpretive theory, the author believes that interpretive theory may well be applied to literary translation.The report is composed of five parts. Part1is an introduction to the writer and the background of the novel. Part2is an introduction to translation task. Part3is concerned with translation preparation and process. Part4is a case study, which analyses the difficulties involved in translating complex sentences and explains how the author tries to solve them under the guidance of interpretive theory. Part5is a summary.
