A Report On The Translation Practice Of Long And Complex English Sentences Under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalence Theory

As the development of economy and the industrialization,a side effect brought by rapid pace of life and work stress is gradually showed,which is mental health issues of human beings.At present,mental health issues have become a hot topic in the world.In order to improve the mental health of people,properly dealing with people‘s mental health issues is very important,which prompts higher requirement for translation.The translation report is based on the first part of the book Existential Therapy:Distinctive Features by British psychologists Emmy van Deurzen and Dr Claire Arnold-Baker,which offers an introduction to what is distinctive about this increasingly popular method,existential therapy,as well as an accessible,bitesize overview of this psychological therapy.The original text belongs to psychological texts,in which there are many long and complex sentences.As the deepening of the exchange between China and foreign countries,the frequency of English long and complex sentences in translation practice is higher and higher,which brings difficulties to translators.How to translate the long and complex sentences has been an important point to achieve high-quality translation.Therefore,the translator chose long and complex sentences as the object of study in this report.In this report,the translator will follow the guidance of functional equivalence theory to explore the translation strategies of the long and complex sentences.Knowing the differences between English and Chinese,the translator mainly adopts four strategies:the first is syntactic linearity;the second is reversed translation;the third is converted translation;and the fourth is comprehensive translation.The translation of part one of this book will make Chinese readers understand the existential therapy and the latest relevant psychological information,thus raise their awareness of mental health.In addition,this translation practice can not only give the translator a deeper understanding of functional equivalence theory,but also be used as a reference for the translation of similar materials.
