The Report is based on the translation materials accumulated during the author’s professional practice in China Intellectual Property Magazine. Under the guidance of Functionalist Translation Theory, the Report analyzes the language features of IP texts, summarizes the techniques for translating IP texts and shares the author’s translation experience. Despite of personal restrictions in this profession, the Report can provide reference for Chinese-English and English-Chinese translation of IP texts. In the first part, the Report explains the background, objectives and significance of the project for professional practice. Then it introduces the two texts which are used as analysis materials (one text for Chinese-English translation and another for English-Chinese), with focus on their sources, contents and language features. According to the basic characteristics of the chosen texts, the Report chooses the functionalist translation theory as the basic theoretical framework. In accordance with the basic principles and requirements of this theory, the Report summarizes the practical approaches for translation, including:word speech conversion method, long sentence splitting method and voice conversion method. With reference to the specific contents of the two texts, the Report analyzes the language features from perspectives of words and phrases, sentence and paragraph. Considering the difficulties in translation, the Report finds guidance from the functionalist translation theory and summarizes certain skills for translating IP texts. As a conclusion, the Report shares the experience of IP translation and provides translation suggestions.
