The study aims to explore teachers’perceptions on characteristics of CLT, strategies, and problems using CLT approach to teach Spoken English to Cambodian university students. The other previous studies show the overall perceptions and the useful strategies of teachers towards their teaching in a real social context. Also, the facts are shown that CLT is the effective approach in teaching language. However, some teachers have some teaching process issues in using this approach due to facing some obstacles while applying in their real world of teaching which lead students fail to use English to communicate publicly. Roger (1995) stated teachers’ issues and their perceptions in teaching of CLT are considered to be effective ways in teaching language communication. Due to the issues and facts above, the researcher decides to conduct this study in Cambodian teaching context.A mixed-method study of quantitative and qualitative approach is employed in this research study. Questionnaires and interview are the main data collection instrument and both quantitative and qualitative data are obtained from respondents. Respondents are75teachers (25from one department and another one is50) from two departments of English language from two universities in Phnom Penh capital city of Cambodia. Fives respondents are selected purposively to interview. Quantitative data is analyzed by using descriptive statistics SPSS and qualitative data is analyzed by using content analysis qualitative approach.
