Guide interpretation is a very specific interpreting practice. With globalization andthe rapid development of the domestic tourism industry, more and more foreign touristschoose China as their travel destinations. So the demands for the quantity and quality ofguide interpreters become high. Guide interpretation requires interpreters not only tointerpret and explain accurately, but also to have the skills of solving problems andemotional communication with the tourists. Guide interpreters’ work has strongtimeliness and immediate responds, so sufficient knowledge reservation and excellentoral English ability are necessary for guide interpreters. Guide interpretation play animportant role in this cross-cultural activity. As a cultural envoy, interpreters shouldhave awareness of cross-cultural communication and enough understanding of exoticculture so that foreign tourists can get a more comprehensive understanding of Chinaincluding China’s scenery and culture and enjoy a high-quality tour in China.In this activity, tour guide interpreters need to overcome the barrier of culturedifferences to realize effective communication. Considering cultural differences,particular attention should be paid to the choice of English expression in the process ofinterpreting. In addition to using of language, non-verbal communication is alsoimportant factors. Non-verbal communication includes facial expressions, movements,gestures, intonation which directly affect the communication results.Preparation before real practice is necessary for guide interpretation. Besides theguide presentation and knowledge of the attractions, translation of special vocabularyrelated to social issues, cultures, customs, folklore should be prepared sufficiently forconsecutive interpretation in the practice,. This article is based on my personal practicewhich in contact of tourists from different countries and different ages and occupations.,The meaning of the paper is to explore how to achieve the accuracy and intelligibility todo a better job and to propose appropriate countermeasures and best translation methods,to optimize the role of language and cultural bridge by generalizing and summarizingthe problems encountered during the presentation and interpretation. Based on the four times practice of being the tour guide interpreter of DalianChina International Travel Agency from October,2012to May,2013,the paper lists thecharacteristics of guide interpretation and problems encountered in the practiceaccording to the analysis of interpretation materials and put forward targeted translationstrategies and solutions by introspection and principal feedback.
