This thesis, using the questionnaire instrument, investigated the competence ofteaching elementray Chinese in80teachers sent from China to Kyrgyzstan. Aninterview was also conducted to20teachers to understand the special abilities andrequirements Chinese teachers need to have in teaching elementray Chinese inKyrgyzstan and specific suggestions they made for recruiting Chinese teachers toKyrgyzstan in the future.The study found that their competency of teaching primary Chinese teacher isgood on the whole, but there was much room for improvement in research capabilitiesand career planning. Chinese language proficiency, knowledge of Chinese culture,cross-cultural communication skills and foreign languages ability (Russian, Kyrgyzlanguage) were considered to be prioritized in professional development. Comparedwith the requirements of general Chinese teachers, quick adaption to the environmentand improvement of cross-cultural communication skills were top two abilitiesrequired of international elementary Chinese teachers.This study concluded by suggesting that Chinese language proficiency, Chinesecultural awareness, mastery of one of the local languages in order to achieve effectivecross-cultural communication, strong environmental adaptability and mentalendurance, cheerfulness and optimism be prioritized in recruiting Chinese teachers forinternational learners.
