This report is based on my translation of Introduction to China in English, a book which introduces many aspects about China. It presents a lot of information on China from its magnificent geography, its long-standing and well-established history, multi-colorful landscapes, well-known scenic spots, attractive cities, fantastic Chinese cultural quintessence, delicious food, cheerful holidays, historical relics and extremely valuable animals and plants. By learning its vivid description and rich content, numerous English fans in China and foreign friends who are eager to get familiar with Chinese culture will gain a lot. I was arranged to translate the English materials in authentic Chinese by a book workroom in Xi’an. Thus it will pave a way for its publication to show a magnificent China to readers at home and abroad.During the process of translating the materials, I found so many cultural differences between Chinese language and English language, especially in terms of expression, collocation, syntactic structure and writing style. Hence, I attempt to analyze the translation of the text from cultural perspective. Under the guidance of the theoretical framework-Semantic Translation (ST) and Communicative Translation (CT) put forward by Peter Newmark, I try to find applicable strategies of cultural translation, show the importance of the cultural translation and cultural nature of translation. Furthermore, it has been found that authentic, fluent and high-quality translation version can be rendered through application of strategies. Finally, the goal to spread the Chinese culture can be realized. This report consists of four chapters. The first chapter is the task description of translation, which includes source and requirement of the translation task, the framework of the report, and the research significance. The second chapter is the description of the translation process, including introduction to the source text, preparations, translation theories, translation difficulties and text proofreading. The third chapter, the main part of this report, is the analysis of translation case. It includes the analysis of changes in part of speech, changes of voice and the translation of sentences. The fourth chapter is the summary to the translation practice.
