The author selects the documentary Miss Representation as the target of the simulatedinterpreting practice. The video lasts about ninety minutes and the author chooses the firstsixty minutes as the consecutive interpreting practice.Miss Representation is a2011American documentary film. It explores how mainstreammedia contribute to the under-representation of women in influential positions by circulatinglimited and often disparaging portrayals of women. The film interweaves stories from teenagegirls to influential women to give an inside look at the media and its message.French school of interpretative theory is one of the leading theories guiding theinterpretation process. The theory holds that the aim of interpreting is to pass meanings andthe interpreters should give interpretation based on the intended meaning derived from thecontext rather than on the words in source language. Comprehension, deverbalization andreproduction of the intended meaning of the original speaker constitute the whole process ofinterpreting. Under the guidance of the interpretative theory, the author makes an analysis ofsome specific examples, taking into consideration of the constraints of background knowledge, personal accent and the rebuilding of long sentence. Some translation skills, such as part-ofspeech adjustment, reductive paraphrasing, conversion of antonym and addition and reductionare employed in the course of translation. In the end of the essay, the author summarizes thewhole paper and provides some reflections in order to improve the interpreting in the future.
