International exchange of information has been greatly intensified with the advent andpromotion of globalization, especially political and economic information that is closelyrelated to the development of a nation and people’s daily life. As an important means ofpolitico-economic information transmission and exchange, politico-economic newstranslation thus plays an increasingly significant role in this information age.As a special category of news, politico-economic news shares the common features ofnews such as freshness, significance and accuracy, but more importantly, it differs greatlyfrom other categories of news in that it contains obvious political stance and dominantideologies of a nation. Politico-economic news translation is thus not merely linguistictransformation, but rather, a manifestation of political and economic powers of differentnations. Therefore, when translating politico-economic news, apart from the traditionallyadvocated internal factors in translation as faithfulness, smoothness and elegance, translators should pay more attention to external factors like the political and economicenvironment in the source language and the target language, power struggles among anddominant ideologies in different nations. With an attempt to analyze the external factors affecting politico-economic Englishnews translation, the thesis adopts postcolonialism as a theoretical basis. Postcolonialismfocuses on the cultural aspects of translation and takes historical, political, economic andideological factors into account to discuss the power relations and inequality betweenstrong and weak nations. With Reference News as a case study, this thesis tries to figure outthe postcolonial tendency in politico-economic English news translation and ways todecolonize. Through thorough analysis, the author finds that postcolonial tendency is quiteobvious in politico-economic English news translation in that most of the translatedpolitico-economic news in Reference News is selected from reports by world’s leadingnews agencies of developed nations or regions and foreignization is widely used as atranslation strategy in politico-economic English news translation. To decolonize, the author encourages translators to select more politico-economic news about developingnations appropriately and adopt the strategy of domestication skillfully inpolitico-economic English news translation. In addition, translators should adopt specifictranslation methods to decolonize in the process of politico-economic English newstranslation, such as recreating news titles, deleting and substituting those parts that are notfaithful to facts and go against China’s dominant ideologies as well as adding words whennecessary to present Chinese readers with the latest yet impartial politico-economicinformation.
