Xu Ling is one of the leaderships in the literature history of the Six Dynasties(220-589) and his derived parallel proses make a critical contribution to the development of the literature in this representative period. This paper consists of seven sections while the characteristics of Xu Ling’s parallel proses are demonstrated in details through the first five sections. In Section1, through a statistical comparison of the couplets in the articles of Lu Ji, Yan Yanzhi, Ren Fang and Xu Ling, a conclusion is drawn that both the ratio and styles of couplets are greatly improved by Xu Ling. Section2analyzes the various kinds of allusions and investigates the social and family influence which leads to this diversity. The imageries created by color and material words and the beautiful views created by replacing and hiding words are analyzed in Section3.Next, the level and oblique tones of the several representative works are illustrated to validate the musicality in the paralleled proses of Xu Ling. To demonstrate the flexibility, the employment of four-six couplets, function words and bose sentences are statistically analyzed in Section5.Section6describes the characteristics of Xu Ling’s paralleled proses that rigorous reasoning and emotional exaggeration are cautiously compromised while Section7introduces the evaluations of them which are made by historical scholars.Although Xu Ling is a crucial artist in the Southern and Northern Dynasties Period, his works have not been exhaustively researched. In this paper, the reason why the formal beauty of paralleled proses draws much attention is investigated based on Xu Ling’s living background and his collected85paralleled proses. It is believed that the research breadth of Xu Ling can be hopefully expanded.
