Semantic and communicative translation methods are the most outstandingachievements in Peter Newmark’s translation theory. Which translation method should bechosen depends on several reasons, such as the background, the text type, the translationpurpose and so on. This paper focuses on the translation methods applied in the translation ofChapter5and Chapter6in The Second Language Learning and Language Teaching. As anacademic work, The Second Language Learning and Language Teaching is clearly andlogically organized with refined words and complex sentences, causing many problems in thetranslation. For this reason, in order to get the translation done perfectly, both semantic andcommunicative translation methods are adopted in this translation project. Semantictranslation lays emphasis on not only the content but also the form of the original work, whichcan reproduce the context meaning of the original work; while communicative translationmethod centers on the reader’s reactions of the target text, which allows the translator tointerpret the original meaning of the context. This paper demonstrates how the two translationmethods were used in the translation project.
