Hypotaxis-oriented English is characterized by the complete sentence structure. So, thereare many long English sentences which contain plenty of information. They are formed bywords and clauses with infinitives, prepositional phrases, gerunds and conjunctions. WhileChinese is a parataxis-oriented language which mainly focuses on the meaning conveyance.Hence, a group of short sentences are usually needed to express the complex meaning. Therefore, the English-Chinese translation of long sentences is one of difficulties in the project.Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory suggests that translation is not of literally formalequivalence, but to acquire functional equivalence between the source and target texts. As forthe translation of the text that aims for transmission of information, this theory has practicalsignificance. Based on analyzing the content, language features and function of the source text, the translator has applied Functional Equivalence theory as the translation principle.Additionally, she has adopted such translation methodologies as embedding, cutting, splitting, reversing, converting and recasting to translate long English sentences with complex structuresinto Chinese and accurately convey information of the source text.
