Analysis Of Translating Long And Complex English Sentences From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

With the deepening of globalization,the communication and collaboration between China and the western countries are further increasing.In the process,the importance of translators is emerging,which means both an opportunity and a challenge.In order to seize the opportunity and rise to the challenge,translators are supposed to improve their abilities.The report,based on the translation of Rome: A History in Seven Sackings,and guided by the functional equivalence theory raised by Eugene A.Nida,focuses on the research and discussion of translation strategies of long and complex English sentences.The translation material is excerpted from the chapter one of Rome: A History in Seven Sackings,which is written by Matthew Kneale,a historian and novelist from England.The book concentrates on seven important moments in the history of Rome,talks of the history of Rome in an intriguing way and provides readers with a new perspective to have a better understanding of Rome.Long and complex sentences with complicated modifiers frequently occur in the book which strengthens the difficulty of translating the material.In order to make the translation accurately express the ideas of the author and the readers of the translation have the same experience as those of the original text,the translator chose Nida's functional equivalence theory to support the translation practice.The translation material is a typical one of historical books which are classified as non-literature,so the translator carried out the translation based on Nida's functional equivalence theory to make the target language faithful and expressive.The report includes the following three parts: introduction,main body and conclusion.The first part is introduction.It briefly introduces the relevant information of the book and its greatly realistic meaning and value of translating the book.The second part is main body,which includes three chapters.In chapter one,the translator describes the translation task in details.In this chapter,the translator mainly introduces the characteristics of the material and the reasons of choosing it.In chapter two,the translator depicts the whole process of the translation,including the preparations before the translation task,problems during the translation process and the items after finishing the translation task.In chapter three,the translator analyzes some specific cases.In this chapter,the translator talks about some problems met during the translation process.At the same time,the translator gives some samples to testify the effect of functional equivalence theory in the translation practice.The last part is conclusion.In this part,the translator rethinks the whole process of translation and summarizes the effect of functional equivalence theory in translating long and complex English sentences.At the same time,the translator makes some constructive recommendations.
