A Report On Translation Of Second Laneuase Learnins And Teachins Excerpts

The main source for my thesis is the Chinese translation text of the eighth andninth chapter of Second Language Learning and Teaching written by Vivian Cook,professor of Second Language Learning and Teaching at Newcastle University. As oneof the latest and most influential textbooks brought in by Foreign Language Teachingand Research Press, Second Language Learning and Teaching is one of works inContemporary Library of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics at home, and itserves as a textbook for TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)graduates in many universities abroad. This paper aims to solve the representativeemphases and difficulties of the target text from the perspective of Nord’s textfunction theory. The language of the original text language is descriptive. There arenumerous scientific terms of Second language learning and teaching, proper nouns,foreign names and book titles. And complicated sentence patterns and structures,inserted elements and modifiers, as well as words and sentences of other foreignlanguages such as French, Japanese, Spanish are very common. Thus the originaltext’s function is information and knowledge-oriented. This paper, taking the texttranslation emphases and difficulties of the translation project as example, adopts textfunction theory to guide the analysis of examples from the aspects of lexical,syntactical and functional communication. And the translation methods such as zerotranslation, literal translation, amplification and splitting are employed to solve thetranslation problems. Thus, we hope the study could provide reference for thetranslation practice of same type text.
