A Report On Translation Of Selected Articles From Buttonwood Column Of The Economist

English publications function as an important medium for domestic audience tolearn news and information of various countries. Among these, financial news reportsin foreign journals share textual features of both English news and financial texts.Translators tend to regard it as a high job that they should transmit full informationfrom the source text to readers and keep its language style in the process.The thesis is based on the translation of articles selected from the Buttonwoodcolumn of The Economist. We use it as the material to conduct our survey on writingcharacteristics as well as translation strategies of leading English and Americanpublications. Firstly, the Chinese translation of the articles helps the translator get abetter understanding of the articles’ content as well as linguistic features of financialnews repotrs‘Secondly, through the analysis of methods to translate titles, phrases andvarious sentence patterns as well as paragraph convergence, the translator hasdeveloped her translation capabilities and summarized the corresponding translationapproaches applicable to articles in the Buttonwood Column. Thirdly, the translator issupported by professional ifnancial knowledge and polishes the translation by using avariety of relevant strategies including literal, liberal translation, changing word orderand content supplement. Omissions and mistakes are found and rectified in theproofreading process so as to produce coherent and acceptable texts. At last, byreviewing the whole translating and proofreading process, the translator hassummarized her experiences of translation practice and pointed out some open,unresolved problems for futrher discussion.
