Ort On Translation Of Twenty Steps To Wisdom

This translation task covers contents of Chapter One to Chapter Fifteen of a book Twenty Steps to Wisdom written by the American anthropologist Jennifer James. It is an instrumental book to guide people to seek the wisdom of life.The report consists of three parts. The first part is composed of the selected source text and translation. The second part as a core part includes the critical commentary. It comprises three chapters. The first chapter begins with the introduction of Jennifer James’s background and her writing style. And then, it represents the translation task. The second chapter describes the translation process and assumedly puts forward the translation strategy that would be used under the guidance of the communicative translation and semantic translation proposed by Peter Newmark. The third chapter categorizes language features of the original text from lexical and syntactical level as well as the use of punctuation marks. Additionally, solutions to the problems are put forward according to the translation strategy of Peter Newmark and functional equivalence theory of Eugene Nida. The final part summarizes the translation problems and approaches Ⅰ adopt.It is of great significance to translate this book. Academically, the translation project not only improves my translation skills but also can contribute to academic research in the translation at the lexical and syntactical level as well as the translation of punctuation marks. Furthermore, it enormously strengthens the cultural communication between the West and China. Twenty Steps to Wisdom is a self-help book full of western wisdom, which facilitates hundreds of thousands of readers to achieve the knowledge and find the wisdom of life in America. Hopefully, the translation can encourage more Chinese readers get wisdom as well. Meanwhile, Ⅰ hope this translation could further contribute to Chinese translation theory.
