BackgroundSocial adaptation is the acclimatization of the individual to our living environment of great variety. As junior school students are at puberty, the development of physical and psychological changes will undoubtedly affect their social adaptation state during this specific period of time. What’s more, the shock and impact brought to every individual as a consequence of the rapid change of our society contributes more to the pressure, crisis, depression and confusion of middle school students. As a consequence, their social adaptation problem needs to be concerned urgently in the course of adapting the world as well as developing individual personality.ObjectivesWith the aid of discussion on the present situation of Zhengzhou middle school students’ social adaptation and research on the relationship among middle school students’ social adaptability, social support and defense style, junior school students’ social adaption capacity will be enhanced, therefore, they will grow healthily.MethodsAccording to the level of economic development and urbanization level, we divided the6districts into three sampling areas, industrial and mining area, commercial area and college’s area, in each of which we adopted the method of stratified sampling, choosing randomly from each area a public middle school. Students from Grade1to Grade3were all investigated in the survey, during the process of which we have issued398questionnaires and recycled363effective questionnaires with the effective rate being to91.2%. Taking children’s social adaptability questionnaire, social support rating scale (SSRS) and defense style questionnaire (DSQ) as a research tool, this research aims to discuss preliminarily about the characteristics of middle school students social adaption. On the basis of it, this research digs completely into the relationship among social adaption, social support and defense style. The materials adopt SPSS17.0statistical software for data entry and statistical analysis and use the statistical methods such as descriptive statistics, variance analysis, t test, correlation analysis, and regression analysis, etc.Results1. On the interpersonal communication ability dimension scores, there were significant differences between each grade students (P<0.05). The research also indicates the significant difference on frustration tolerance between men and women (P <0.05)2. There is no significant correlation on Social adaptation of frustration tolerance and social support of objective support, subjective support of independent living ability and the social support, exploitation and total score while the rest are on the contrary (P<0.05, P<0.01). Immature defense mechanisms and Intermediate defense mechanisms have significant negative correlation with the total score of interpersonal communication, emergency response, setbacks and social adaptation (P<0.01). Mature defense mechanism is significantly and positively correlated with the total score of emergency response, setbacks, independent life and social adaptation (P<0.05, P<0.01). Conceal factor was negatively correlated with each factor except independent life factor (P<0.01).3. Immature defense mechanisms are negatively correlated with social adaptation (t=-7.021, P<0.001), Mature defense mechanism was associated with a positive significant social support of subjective support、objective support dimension (t=4.280, P<0.001; t=3.197, P<0.01; t=2.904, P<0.01).Conclusions 1. Junior high school students have better capacity in adaption to the society and the survey reflects an upward trend in the social adaptation ability of junior high students in general, among which Grade3students achieve the highest,followed by Grade1and Grade2students. Boys are better in setbacks bear ability and poorer in independent life ability and interpersonal skills than girls.2. High levels of social support can promote the good development of social adaptability in junior high school students, use more mature defense mechanism can help improve the social adaptability.
