As one of the most important materials for studying unauthorized characters, Dunhuang manuscripts vividly reappear the virtual condition of using Chinese characters from the Western Jin Dynasty to The Song Dynasty. The medieval Dunhuang manuscripts with date from six internal libraries were collected for further study. This paper consists of four chapters. Chapter one:A brief introduction of unauthorized characters during middle ancient times, mainly discussing the definition and criterion of unauthorized characters, introduction for the dictionary of this period as well as current researches. Chapter two:Analysis for unauthorized characters of Chinese manuscripts in middle ancient times, analyzing the five patterns for the production of unauthorized characters after calculating the frequency of unauthorized characters. Chapter three:Analysis for cases of unauthorized characters, partly selecting unauthorized characters in materials for further study to reveal the cause and process. Chapter four:Re-discussing for previous researches of unauthorized characters.
