As a sunrise industry in China, tourism has gained great achievements in this country and, as one of the world-known tourist destinations, China is a steady attraction for thousands of foreign tourists every year. This thesis is a case study of the translation of the brochure "Chifeng:The Back Garden of Beijing", for which the author is one of the translators. With a perspective of the Skopos Theory, the author focuses on the transmission of the cultural messages and the application of appropriate techniques during the progress of the translation with a discussion of two key aspects in the treatment of the Mongolian vocabulary and the long and difficult sentences. It also offers an elaboration on the approaches adapted in translating the classic Chinese poems cited in the tourism texts. In dealing with such linguistic characteristics as culture-gapped words in translating Mongolian words into English, the principle that must be observed is, the translation of the tourism text should be tourist-oriented in order to enhance their comprehension, publicizing the tourism resources to attract tourists, and making necessary sentence adjustments to convey messages and information in the source language texts with flexibility but no jeopardy to the major contents. This paper consists of an introduction part, the body, and a conclusion. The body of the thesis has four parts:the first part is the literature review and a brief introduction of the Skopos Theory; the second part discusses the characteristics of the tourism texts; the third part summarizes the characteristics and translation method of Mongolian vocabulary; the fourth part is the key of this paper and it introduces the application of the Skopos Theory in the translation of tourist text, and summing up the translation methods and skills from the author’s own practices in tourism text translation. The thesis concludes that the translations of the tourism texts allow the reader to understand and to accept it in the target language environment in order to arouse the readers’ interest in travelling, and to achieve the purpose of cultural exchange and the promotion of the tourism resources.
