A Study On Features Of Brick-wood Structured Towers In Suzhou And Hangzhou (End Years Of Five Dynasty To Northern Song Dynasty)

During the division period of the Five Dynasties in China,the Kingdom ofWuyue,which established and ruled by the Qians, in Jiang Nan had kept a peacefuland stable state,which under the policy of “defend the country and ensure a peacefullife for the people”,so steady and in-order was the society,which in turn promotedeconomic progress and provided a steady circumstance for the development ofvarious aspects.At the same time,the development of architecture in China during thistime was mainly focused in JiangNan,the rulers of the Qians’s pious belief inBuddhism propeled the religion’s development,large numbers of Temples and towershad been built,and JiangNan during this time was distinguished by its Buddhistarchitetures,of which stone towers and brick-wood structured towers standed out asthe important architecture achivement.Now these ruins,whose representative isSuzhou and Hangzhou and among which brick-wood structured towers was the mostdistinguished,mainly located in the territory of Wuyue kingdom.This treatise treats of brick-wood structured towers,which was a representative inthe architecture from the end years of Five Dynasty to the Song daynasty,includingYunyansi tower and Ruiguangsi tower in Suzhou,Leifeng tower in Hangzhou.Thistower formation,which started from Five Dynasty and developed continually in twoSong dynasties,acted as the pattern of Buddhist towers in JiangNan and impacted thewhole district.Natural environment,humanistic community,the advances in technique had alltogether determined the rigional architecture development,based on the three aspectsabove,this treatise analyzes the source of this formation pattern.By dissecting thecharateristics and features of this architeture patter,the article makes a review on thedevelopment of it.At last,we discussed the patter’s embodiment in stoutness,utility andaesthetics,also the question-oriented design perceptions,from which we unveil thearchitecture achivement of the pattern in this period.
