After World Wall II, with the development of productive forces and technology,people’s live has been enriched greatly, thus leading people indulged in the prosperityof social material that is not real and lost negativity, criticalness and opposability tothe unreasonable phenomenon and unfair system of the system.Marcuse found a serious of problems after the extremely prosperous illusion. Onthe basis of the combination of Freud’s psychoanalysis and Marxist alienation theory,Marcuse chooses Heidegger’s humanism as a starting point. He exposes the reality ofthe overall alienation in capitalist society mainly from the essence of humanconsumption alienation, the suppression of people, the lack of freedom and thedeterioration of the human environment. Marcuse criticizes the “One Dimensional”who has lost the negativity, creation and transcendence. At the same time, Marcuserefutes the ill-posedness of the developed industrial capitalism society, and tries hisbest to find and establishes a new dimension of modern industrial society to formtwo-dimensionalmen and construct a two-dimensional society. The article aims athelping us understand Marcuse’s One-Dimensional theory by analysising the root andthe cause of Marcuse’s One-Dimenstional thought, by discribing the performance ofthe One-Dimensional society and by discussing the influence of the One-Dimensionaltheory.Marcuse’s criticism of One-dimensional inherits Marxists spirtit of capitalism,hegrasps the real crisis behind the unreal prosperity. It can help us understand the impactof science and technology on society correctly. Also it can provide us with animportant reference for China’s socialist modernization underway. But Marcuse’s overradical ethics of science and technology, pessimism utopian theory leads Marcuse’stheory to idealism.
