This study focuses the example of the Xiangshan Temple inQuanzhou and the Buddhism, which refers to the Records of Xiangshanduring the period of Emperor Kangxi. It aims to discuss the interaction ofthe elite culture and the mass culture by analyzing the different attitudesof national power, local officials and local people in shaping theBuddhism in Xiangshan Temple.The shaping of the Buddhism in Xiangshan Temple Buddhistincludes the formation period during the Tang and Song dynasty, and theextension during the Ming and Qing dynasty. Master Quanzhen built thetemple and preached in the Tang dynasty, which laid the foundation ofBuuhism. Then the Xiangshan Temple got five canonizations during theSong dynasty by four emperors, which turned the Buddhism into officialand orthodox stuff. In the Ming dynasty, the state founded the Sengzhengdivision, which officially retrieved the mastery of local temple in order torule the local people better.During the period of Emperor Kangxi, hegranted a inscription of “Shoushicixin”for the Xiangshan Temple, whichbrouht great repution. The Buddhism spread widely since then.During the spreading of Buddhism,the local life and the localculture has changed a lot. The interaction of Buddhism and Buddhistculture not only changed the local life and culture, but also had greatinfluence on the Buddhist festivals, temple economics, religion tourismand so on.
