Interpreting Practice Report Of The Canton Fair

The exhibition industry in China plays an increasing important role in the development of a city, even of a country. Exhibition interpreting could promote communication among different persons. With smaller coverage but more targeted than other business interpreting activities, it also belongs to the business interpreting. And it accounts a lot in the whole interpreting research history.This report is based on the author’s personal interpreting experience in the112th and113th Canton Fair. The author chooses this as the topic due to the following reasons:first, MTI education is different from academic education, it put more emphasis on practice, so the author write a typical interpreting practice in her study; second, with the globalization of economy, exhibition plays an increasing important role in economic development of a city or a country, so this practice report could use fist-hand examples to discuss it.Besides the introduction and conclusion, this thesis mainly divided into three parts. The thesis firstly introduces the exhibition practice, including the operation of the Canton Fair and the exhibition interpreting, and then briefly introduces the features of the businesses exhibition and business exhibition interpreting. Lots of relevant glossaries and interpreting tactics have been prepared before interpreting. The author also prepared relevant tactics before interpreting, including omission and explanation, literal translation and free translation, use of by-languages and so on.Secondly, the thesis describes the whole interpreting process in which the interpreter also acts as a salesman and an assistant. This thesis discusses the interpreter’s subjective consciousness, non-neutrality standpoint, cross-cultural communication awareness and coping tactics for emergency events, etc. During the interpreting process, the author has encountered lots of difficulties, such as cultural conflicts, misunderstandings caused by insufficient business knowledge and so on.The last chapter discusses reflection after the exhibition. The ethnical consciousness of the interpreter includes the interpreting quality, fidelity and professional loyalty. This thesis also discusses the unsolved problems of exhibition interpreting include the identity of the interpreter, uneven level of interpreters’qualities and the misinterpreting problems. As to the enlightenment and prospect for future study, researches in exhibition interpreting are relatively insufficient. This practical report may serve as a reference for future exhibition interpreting research and for students who major in interpreting.
