With the increasing frequency of academic exchange, academic journals have become a main channel for the international academic communication. Except a few English academic journals at home, most journals in China are published in Chinese. In order to meet the need of international communication, most Chinese journals urge papers published in Chinese to attach English abstracts with them. Under such kind of circumstances, abstract translation becomes an important part in academic journal editing. In other words, the translation of Chinese abstracts into English has become a necessity and has played an important role in the international academic communication.Due to the different linguistic features and writing standards, lots of difficulties and barriers may occur in the way of translation. Based on C-E abstract translation practice of Journal of Hengyang Financial and Industrial Vocational College, the author analyzes the difficulties in academic journal translation and summarizes some strategies from perspective of Functional Equivalence in this report. The author also makes some suggestions to C-E abstract translation of academic journal.This report is divided into four parts. The first chapter is a brief introduction to the author’s translation practice of an academic journal-- Journal of Hengyang Financial and Industrial Vocational College and the C-E abstract translation task for this journal.The second chapter introduces all sorts of preparations the author has made for this translation practice, which includes summarizing the features of Chinese and English abstracts and choosing the Functional Equivalence theory as the main theoretical foundation. At the end of this chapter, the author also proposes principles for academic paper abstract translation.In the third chapter, examples of the translation practice are listed. The author describes the main difficulties in the C-E abstract translation of Journal of Hengyang Financial and Industrial Vocational College from three aspects that is information richness, Chinese serial verb construction and structurally incomplete sentence in Chinese.The last chapter carries out a deep study on the abstract translation from the perspective of Functional Equivalence theory. The author analyzes and sums up strategies from lexical level, syntactic level and textual level with Functional Equivalence.In the end, it comes to the conclusion that the translation for academic journal abstract is not as simple as a process of transferring words from one language symbol to another. It requires plenty of translation practice, full understanding of translation texts and a wide range of knowledge and so on.
