Nowadays, China is quickening its pace of modernization and trading more frequently with other countries day by day. As a result, automotive market is flourishing and thriving. Advanced and new types of automobiles incessantly flew into the Chinese automobile market, but bring an urgent and tough problem at the same time, namely the problems of translating technical files concerning automotives into Chinese, especially a plenty of English documentation. Automobile magazines and books of various kinds fill book stores, large or small. Under such trend, automotive engineering as a major in colleges wins an increasing number of college students’ favor. They learn the most advanced and professional knowledge and read a great deal of professional literature, among which English literature occupying a large part. As a result, a course named automotive English come into being. However, for most students who major in automotive engineering, English is an obstacle, automotive English is even a bigger trouble. A great number of automotive English text books published in Chinese market do not provide translation, which definitely poses a hurdle for the students. Consequently, many students cannot fully understand the material they learn or even they totally give up this course. Therefore, to translate all the texts into Chinese is essential. This translation practice report is based on translating Mr. Song Jingui’s masterpiece A Reading and Translating Course Book on Automotive English, systematically analyzing the distinct characteristics of automotive English. During the translation process, the translator takes Nida’s equivalence theory as a guiding principle for translation, other translation theories as a support, and various translation techniques as auxiliary tools to successfully complete this translation project. The translator has a fruitful experience though the whole translation process is extremely difficult.
