As a natural property of language, fuzziness attracts the attention of scholars even fromthe time of ancient Greece. Besides fuzziness and the fuzziness of language, the relationshipbetween fuzzy language and other subjects is also a key point for research, for instance: theresearch of fuzzy language and translation, as well as interpretation. Fuzzy language isomni-present in human languages, and it is of crucial importance in human communication.Accordingly, during the process of E-C interpretation, due to the influence from manyelements, the spokesmen use fuzzy language of all kinds, which affects the quality ofinterpretation. Therefore, interpreters should master correct strategies to cope with and solvethe problem of fuzzy language. The aim of the research is to find correct tactics for interpreters to solve the problem offuzzy language based on proper understanding. Qualitative research method and quantitativeresearch method are used in the thesis. Under the guidance of Nida’s “FunctionalEquivalence” theory, concerning various kinds of fuzziness in languages and their pragmaticfunctions, the translatability and obstacles of fuzzy language, the characteristics and differentstages of interpretation, analyzing some relevant language materials, explaining some fuzzylanguage phenomena appeared in E-C interpretation, the thesis concludes the reason of thesephenomena and poses proper interpretation tactics.According to Nida’s “Functional Equivalence” theory, four standards are selected tojudge the effectiveness and quality of the interpretation of fuzzy language: sending theoriginal message, expressing the spirit and style of original texts, clear and coherent languagewhich conforms to the grammar rules and idiomatic expressions in the target language, andsimilar response between original audience and target audience. Then the relevant tactics forinterpreters to deal with language fuzziness are summed up. The conclusion is as follows: inE-C interpretation process, interpreters should infer the intentions of the speakers and try tograsp the exact meaning of the information at first, and then they should deal with the fuzzylanguage by using different tactics, including changing the fuzzy language into fuzzy language or precise language. Under certain circumstances, in order to keep the interpretationwork going smoothly, interpreters also have to change the precise language into fuzzylanguage. There are five chapters in the thesis. The first chapter is the revelation of the researchbackground, as well as the significance and objectives. The second chapter is the literaturereview which introduces the relevant theory and the related empirical studies. The thirdchapter introduces the methodology used in the thesis and analyzes some materials chosen indifferent fields. The fourth chapter talks about the tactics of fuzzy language E-C interpretationbased on functional equivalence theory. The last chapter concludes the thesis and emphasizesthe major findings. The limitations of the current research and the suggestions for furtherresearch are also posed at the end of the thesis.
