This is a project report on the translation of medical papers. This report includes a brief introduction, exploration and summary of the process of translation of medical papers translated by the author from Chinese to English. With much more achievements made in China’s medical research and the frequent medical information exchanges between China and foreign countries, the translation of medical papers is of great importance for promoting medical exchanges between China and foreign countries. Medical papers, with many different professional vocabularies and at times, unintelligible sentences, are distinctive in style and diction. Concepts such as simplicity, standardization and correctness are included in its language characteristics. In order to better complete the translation tasks, the author made considerable translation preparation, including reading various books, newspapers and journals related to the guidance of the translation of medical treatises such as Chinese-English Translation Techniques for Medical Treatises, thoroughly studying the theory of “functional equivalence”, searching parallel texts and appropriate dictionaries. The author, according to the theory of “functional equivalence”, has summarized methods for the translation of the medical vocabulary and put forward such basic translation strategies as “adding subject” and “logical reshuffling” to deal with complex sentences, for example, sentences with no subject and run-on sentences. In this report, two translational methods were also suggested for the improvement of text structure. Application of these methods will ensure professionalism and correctness of the translation of medical papers. The author in the last part of this report shared the experience learned from this translation practice. The author hopes this report will be beneficial to medical translators.
