In China, the annual Premier’s press conference, which is held by the Ministry ofForeign Affairs during the NPC and CPPCC, draws much attention from the world.The topics are closely related to the national interests. From the perspective ofSkopostheory, the interpreter has the flexibility to choose interpreting strategies tomeet the Skopos of the speaker and himself/herself as well as the expectations of thetarget audience.This dissertation analyzes and summarizes the features of the content of the PressConferences: predictable hot issues closely related to China’s social development andthe choice of words has been given thorough consideration; and the target audienceare well-educated foreign journalists and the foreign public interested in China’snational policies and conditions.By analyzing interpretations of Premier Wen quoted in the press conferencesfrom2007to2012from the perspective of Skopostheory, focusing on the applicationof the three rules and one principle: skopos rule, fidelity rule, coherence rule andfunction and loyalty principle, firstly it provides the criteria for assessment of theeffect of consecutive interpreting of classical Chinese quotations (CCQ) from theperspective of the three rules, namely, to deliver accurate and complete information aswell as the speaker’s emotion in prompt and logical manner. Secondly, it offerssuggestions for strategies that interpreters can adopt to interpret CCQ on diplomaticoccasions, namely literal translation, free translation, and the combination of the twomethods. It hopes to give some inspirations to the interpreters.
