A Report On The Translation Of World Happiness Report 2013(Chapter 4)

Nowadays, diseases caused by the accumulation of negative emotions is on the rise. The number of patients suffering from depression is soaring. Human well-being study is vital for a better understanding of how emotions affect people’s health. Therefore, it is important to know people’s emotions and the effect of people’s positive and negative emotions.This project report was based on the translation of the fourth chapter of World Happiness Report 2013 composed by John Helliwell, Richard Layard and Jeffrey Sachs. This chapter surveys the “hard” evidence of how subjective well-being affects people’s health and how human well-being affects people’s income and social behavior. It is observed that a dynamic relationship exist between happiness and other important aspects of our lives, with influence running in both directions.This translation report consists of four chapters. Chapter One is a description of the translation project, including the project background, objectives and report structure. Chapter Two is an introduction to the source text, the author and the stylistic features of the source text. Chapter Three is about translation difficulties and solutions. The difficulties lie in the translation of terminology, charts and long sentences. The translator used Newmark’s communicative translation strategy to ensure the readability and coherence of the target text. Chapter Four concludes with a retrospection of the translation process and lessons learnt.
