The world has witnessed a rapid development of tourism industry in recent years. However, we cannot deny that the translation quality of tourism texts is limited in satisfying the needs. The translation in this thesis is extracted from a piece of a tourism text about Istanbul. By defining the effects of Newmark’s communicative translation and seeking for specific methods, I came to a conclusion:Newmark’s communicative translation is appropriate for tourism translation.Newmark, a famous translation theorist, thinks highly of language function, text type and readers’ acceptability. He came up with concepts of semantic translation and communicative translation. In semantic translation, the translator focuses on literally translating the original content. In communicative translation, however, the translator has certain amount of freedom to adjust texts in terms of different languages, cultures and pragmatic types. In other words, the translator in communicative translation can explain the original words, adjust original patterns, remove misunderstandings and even correct the mistakes of the source text.According to Newmark’s theory, there are three elements that the translator has to consider for tourism translation:language function, text type and readers’ acceptability. Regarding language function, tourism texts have two main aims, one is to deliver information, the other is to publicize local attractions. Regarding text type, tourism texts can be classified into informative texts and vocative texts. Regarding readers’ acceptability, the tourists need to feel welcomed by target local culture. Thus the author came to the conclusion that communicative translation is suitable for tourism texts.
