Li-bai and Su-shi are deeply influenced byZhuang-zi.The characters in lots of th eir poems are borrowed from Zhuang-zi. Due to different understanding and intention, new meaning will be created when the characters are applied in their poems, or the i mages have nothing to do with the original ones.Their poems are seperately typical of Tang style and Song style. The differeces showed when the same character applied in their poems are due to the differences between the two poets personally, as well as be cause of different formats.This paper can be divided into four chapters, the first chapter is introduction; th e second chapter is the study on the characters in Li-bai’s poems borrowed from Zhu ang-zi.The first section is the study on original image of the characters in Zhuang-zi a s well as the different meaning created when the characters are applied in Li-bai’s poe ms. The second section is the overview of the literary image of the characters in Li-ba i’s poems borrowed from Zhuang-zi:noble-minded man, hermits, celestial being.The third chapter is the study on the characters in Su-shi’s poems borrowed from Zhuang-zi.The first section is the study on original image of the characters in Zhuang-zi as wel 1 as the different meaning created when the characters are applied in Su-shi’s poems. The second section is the overview of the literary image of the characters in Su-shi’s p oems borrowed from Zhuang-zi:confucian scholar, generous man, virtuous man.The f orth chapter is the differences of the same character borrowed from Zhuang-zi in Su-s hi’s and Li-bai’s poems. The first section is the different images of the same character in the two’s poems. Differences of emotion and attitudes, Li-bai’s is kind of indulgen ce while Su-shi’s free and easy. Different arts of characterization:Li-bai’s involves e xpression more while su-shi’s argumentation. Different styles:Li-bai’s are with highs prited mementum while Su-shi’s with distant artistic conception. The second section i s about the reasons resulted in the differences:one is because of personal reason, and t he other is because of different eras they live in. Personal reason is about their differe nt life experiences and characteristics. The second reason is about the characteristics o f differents eras as well as the transition of poems in different eras.
