A Project Report On The Translation Of Cognition And Acquired Language Disorders (Excerpts)

This is a project report on the translation of the book entitled Cognition and Acquired Language Disorders written by Richard K. Peach and Lewis P. Shapiro. The book was published by Elsevier Medcine in 2011. Focusing on the treatment method of language disorders, the authors analyze the production of language deficits in terms of memory and attention, and specific treatment protocols are presented. The translator chooses Chapter 14 of this book to translate. This chapter elaborates on the classification of language disorders and different treatment protocols.The original text belongs to the professional publication, which is characterized with a large number of professional terms, long sentences and passive sentences. So it is of great importance for the translator to understand the original text accurately before translating. Therefore, Tytler’s "three principles" is adopted as the guiding theory in resolving the problems in the translation process. Translation techniques such as division, conversion and amplification are discussed and examples are presented to analyze the specific problems in the translation project.Several implications can be concluded from this translation practice:Firstly, professional publications require translators to make full preparation of the background information. Secondly, when the original texts involve a large number of terminologies, translators should consult related professional dictionaries in order to produce more accurate translation.
