A Translation Report On Life Of Washington (Chapter 1-4, Book First)

This is a project report on the translation of the first four chapters selected from Life of Washington, which is written by Washington Irving, a famous American writer. In this book, Irving not only reproduces the whole life of Washington, but also perfectly records how the United States of America was founded. So translating this book into Chinese can help provide a more convenient window for Chinese to know Washington as well as the history of the United States. From this point, this translation work is realistically meaningful.In this report, the author sets forth how to deal with the translation difficulties encountered during the translation work and makes a summary of the inspirations and lessons obtained so as to gather some experience for the future translation practice. In the third chapter of this report, the author describes some translation difficulties encountered during the translation work, and, based on the translation principle of "faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance", selects several typical cases for specific text analysis, discussing how to use addition, sentence regrouping, sentence pattern transformation and other translation methods to deal with these difficulties.In the translation process, the author has obtained the following enlightenments: first, before translation work, translators should make a thorough survey of the background information related to the original text so as to help the translators to comprehend the translation contents better and thus avoid misunderstanding to the uttermost; second, translators should be adept in utilizing dictionaries, internet and other tools to assist the conduction of translation work; third, after the first translation, translators should read through the translation version and do proofreading more than once to improve the quality of translation, which is also a crucial step to obtain a qualified translation version.
