Ming and Qing Dynasties have always beenan important part in Chinese history for scholars at home and abroad to explore. Fully understanding the origin of all kinds of consequences and the outcomes could be conducive to explainingvarious problems in those historical periods. Many Chinese and foreign scholars carry out macro and overall analysis by focusing on Hui-chou prefecture in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, which has exerted an important influence on studying Hui-chou prefecture in terms of society, history and culture. Based on the Fan genealogy, and with reference to a series of big events recorded, thisbook explores the development and evolution of the local history through micro and lower level analysis.This is a translation project report on Chapter IV:The Demographic Dynamics of a Local Lineage in Sixteenth Century China:Further Case Study on the Development of the Fan Lineage, Hsiu-ninghsien,1500-1600and Chapter V: Bondservants, Social Conflict, and the Ming-Ch’ing Transition in Hui-chou Prefecture 1644-1646:A Narrative of’Strange Defeat’ of Harriet T. Zurndorfer’ sacademic monograph:Change and Continuity in Chinese Local History: The Development of Hui-chou Prefecture 800-1800. Based on the nature and usability of the Fan genealogical data depending on Hsiu-ning Fan-shih tsu-p’u, Chapter IV discusses the demographic dynamics of Fan lineage focusing on mortality, marriage and fertility respectively while Chapter V examines the social structure and the background reason for the fall of the Ming ruling house and its replacement by the Manchu Ch’ing State through focusing on two local representatives in Ming-Ch’ing .transitional period.The main contents of this translation project reportcan be divided into four major parts:Part One is the introduction to the background of this translation project, including its origin, significance and the structure of this report. Part Two is the research background, briefing on the author of the original text, text version, expounding the main idea and analyzing the text. Part Three-Quality Control, the most important part, mainly elaborates the difficulties encountered in translating the ST (source text), and focus on translation methods such as domestication, amplification, combination & division and literal translation under the guidance of the functional skopos principles. Part Four concludes with the enlightenments, lessons learned as well as issues to be solved in the future.This project reportenablesacademic monograph and its translation to draw a certain degree of attention; in addition, with thosespecific translation strategiesunder the guidance of the functional equivalence theory, this report could be taken as a referencefor the literature of the similar kind.
