This project report uses the Third Chapter of the book Understanding Silence and Reticence: Ways of Participating in Second Language Acquisition(SLA), edited by Dr. Dat Bao, a well-known education researcher as its source text. It addresses the phenomenon of reticence in the second language classroom, shedding light on current knowledge about silence and theoretical debates in second language acquisition.Silence in the classroom is a relatively uncommon topic among academics, especially in China. The source text presents that silence is not to be frowned upon;rather it needs to be skillfully managed to improve learning. It can play a positive role in changing the deep-rooted opinion held by many Chinese scholars that the Western educational mode and style that encourage talk in the classroom are more helpful for students’ development. The source text explores the possible roles that silence plays in China’s classrooms in particular by analyzing its types and functions for both the learners and the teachers. This project is guided by Vermeer’s Skopos Theory, which focuses on the target text. This translation report consists of four parts. Chapter One is the introduction of the translation project, including its background and worth. Chapter two is the description of the source text, including author information, and a source text analysis.Chapter Three covers the translation difficulties, the translation theories adopted by the author to guide her translation, and solutions used to tackle those problems.Chapter Four is a summary of the lessons learnt.
